Recycle, upcycle, freecycle, downcycle: Four ways to deal with some of the waste we generate.
To recycle is to put a product through separation and synthesis in order to create a new, similar product.
To upcycle is to change a waste product in order to make it more valuable.
To freecycle is to give something away instead of binning it.
To downcycle is to put a product through separation and synthesis in order to create a new, but less valuable product.
If there were a Venn diagram to show what each of these terms means, there would definitely be some overlap.
There is also repurposing, which is using a product for a purpose that it was not intended for.
